Like most people who work with SEO on a day-to-day basis, I'm always on the look out for new tools that automate as many tasks as possible.

The following list links to the best free SEO tools I've found so far...

These free tools do everything required to get your site to page one of Google (apart from the stuff you have to do yourself). Let's take a closer look at each of them.

SEO Quake:

SEO Quake is an excellent free tool that offers a wealth of useful SEO information via a browser plugin. There are versions for Firefox and Internet Explorer.

SEO Quake can be called up instantly. Simply click on it's icon which can be found in the lower left corner of your browser.

Free SEO Tools

On activation, SEO Quake fetches a wealth of useful SEO data and displays it on-screen. And there's a whole lot more information available via a series of links. Drill down to view all sorts of useful data about on the page you're browsing.

Hint: You needn't limit your SEO Quake activity to your own web site. It allows you to inspect any site you like, and uncover it's SEO secrets.

SEO Quake can be switched off, and set to fetch data only when you need it (recommended). If you start using just one SEO tool today, make sure it's thisĀ one.

Backlink Builder:

Hunting down suitable sites from which to obtain backlinks is a major part of search engine optimisation. Backlink Builder automates this process, and is remarkably effective.

Simply enter the keyword phrase you're interested in, and click the button. backlink Builder returns a list of sites that contain your keyword, and some indication they accept new links. This tool will save you hours of time.

Backlink Checker:

Want to find out who is already linking to your site? Simply enter your URL into the Yahoo Site Explorer, click the 'Explore URL' button, then click the 'InLinks' button to see who is linking to your site. Within seconds you'll see a list of sites that link back to yours.

You can also use this tool on a specific page within your site.

Keyword Density Cloud:

This excellent tool produces a graphic illustration of the density of keywords on a web page. It also displays a traditional table showing the number and relative density score for each keyword.

It's the graphical display that steals the show, as it makes it easy to instantly see what your content is 'shouting' about to search engines.

Google Toolbar:

If you're not keen on installing SEO Quake, you can get Google's own PageRank score for a web page by installing its Toolbar in your browser.

Click the above link and install it to your browser. Then activate the PageRank report by doing the following...

The Google Keyword Analysis Tool:

Google also provides its own keyword analysis tool. It's an excellent way to find out which keyword phrases people are searching on, and how much competition you're up against. It has its own documentation, and you can start using it immediately.

Bonus SEO Tools:

Free In-depth SEO Report:

Monkey Design House offers the most comprehensive SEO Report I've seen. You get a very detailed 56 page report on whichever web page you select (e.g. your site's homepage).

This report points out problems (from an SEO perspective), and explains how to fix them.

The SEO report also points out things that work well, and tells you what's good about them. This is an excellent way to see how the principles in this book apply to your own site.

Web Marketing Talk:

Web Marketing Talk gives you free help, advice, tips, resources and ideas for your own web marketing activity. It covers the following topics...

MegaResponse:

This new Internet Marketing Blog looks very promising, and contains some excellent information and advice.

They promise some unique and useful tools to help with Internet advertising, and I'm keeping an eye out to see what they deliver. I suggest you do the same.

The DIY Guide to SEO Ebook:

This Guide contains a lot of information about search engine optimization. Sometimes it's easier to read this information on a printed page.

I suggest you download the ebook, and print out sections that work better when printed on paper (e.g. more convenient, read it at your leisure, and easily revisit content).
