In addition to securing links back to your site, it's also worth looking at the potential to get to page one via a third party site.
For example, my entry in the UK directory freeindex.com used to appear on page one of Google for a particular keyword phrase.
As I write this, a colleague of mine appears in the #1 spot in Google (UK) for the keyword phrase 'seo trainer' thanks to his ecademy profile.
His Facebook business page appears in position #6 for the same term. This video shows you how to do the same.
I appear on page one for my own name thanks to my Twitter page. That might not sound like much, but I can assure you there are so many people called 'Wayne Davies' who have a well-established web presence, it's more of a challenge than you'd imagine.
