The h1 tag is used to define the headline of the main content on a web page. For example...

<h1>Every Classic Car Enthusiast Will Love This</h1>

...would head content about some useful tool, resource or information of use to classic car enthusiasts.

The text in the h1 tag should include your main keyword for that page. As with the HTML title, it should be a natural sentence.

Your web page should not have more than one heading in h1 tags. If your page has multiple headings, place the most important heading in h1 tags. Use the h2, h3, h4, h5 or h6 tags for less important headings.

Don't use a minor tag (h2, h3, h4, h5 or h6) for your main heading. From an SEO perspective, you want to make sure search engines know what your main heading is, so they can note the keywords that appear in it.

What if there isn't a main section?

Sometimes a web page contains very little content, or has lots of different sections. Such pages may not have an obvious section that can be considered its main content.
